THE PROBLEM
The “before” picture shows the two issues layered on top of each other. The upper front teeth carried heavy yellow-brown staining, uneven in patches across the enamel, which made the smile look dull no matter how well the teeth were otherwise aligned. Sitting right above that, the gumline was visibly inflamed and uneven, red and puffy in places rather than the pale pink, scalloped edge a healthy gumline should have.
These two problems usually feed into each other. Long-standing surface staining is often accompanied by plaque build-up along the gum margin, and that build-up is exactly what triggers gum inflammation over time. An uneven, swollen gumline also throws off the visual proportions of the smile: teeth can look short, uneven in length, or asymmetrical even when the teeth themselves are a reasonably normal shape.
Whitening or veneers alone would not have solved this. Placing veneers over an inflamed, irregular gumline would have locked in that unevenness permanently, and the restoration would never have looked fully natural. The gum architecture needed to be corrected first, and then the teeth. That called for a combined plan: laser gum contouring followed by a full veneer restoration.
CONSULTATION AND TREATMENT PLAN
WHAT WAS ASSESSED DURING THE CONSULTATION
Dr. Suhrab Singh carried out a detailed clinical evaluation before finalising the treatment plan:
- Extent and depth of tooth discolouration assessed to rule out intrinsic staining requiring root canal or bleaching first
- Gum health examined, identifying localised inflammation and an uneven gingival margin
- Gum contour and smile line evaluated to plan symmetrical, proportionate gum recontouring
- Tooth shape, size, and alignment assessed to determine the ideal veneer design
- Bite and occlusion checked to ensure the new veneers would function correctly against the opposing arch
- Patient’s aesthetic goals discussed: a bright, even, natural-looking smile with healthy gums
WHY LASER GUM TREATMENT WAS CHOSEN
- Laser gingivectomy reshapes and corrects the gumline with minimal bleeding, faster healing, and greater precision than conventional gum trimming
- Correcting gum architecture first ensured the veneers would sit against a healthy, evenly contoured gumline for a natural finish
- Ultra-thin all-ceramic veneers require minimal enamel reduction while still fully masking the underlying discolouration
- Ceramic material offers a natural, light-reflective finish that closely mimics real enamel and resists future staining
- Treating the gums and teeth together, rather than sequentially over separate unrelated visits, gave a cohesive, harmonious final result
PRE-OPERATIVE AND POST-OPERATIVE PHOTOS
Before treatment, the frontal view showed stained, discoloured upper teeth with an inflamed, irregular gumline that disrupted the overall symmetry of the smile.
The post-treatment photograph, taken from the same frontal view, shows evenly shaped, bright ceramic veneers set against a healthy, well-contoured pink gumline. The staining is completely masked, the gum margins are symmetrical, and the smile appears natural and harmonious.

Google Review ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 5.0 Ananya Kapoor (Verified Patient) “I had been self-conscious about my stained teeth and puffy gums for years and avoided smiling in photos. Dr. Suhrab explained that the gums needed to be treated first, which I hadn’t expected, and the laser procedure was quick and far less uncomfortable than I imagined. The veneers look completely natural and my gums finally look healthy too. I’m so glad I got this done.” |
POST-PROCEDURE CARE AND RECOVERY
- Avoid hard, crunchy, or very hot/cold foods for the first few days after the laser gingivectomy
- Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and avoid aggressive brushing near the treated gum area during healing
- Rinse with a prescribed antiseptic mouthwash as advised to support gum healing
- Avoid biting into hard foods directly with the veneers, especially in the first few weeks after bonding
- Attend scheduled follow-up visits to monitor gum healing and veneer fit
- Once healed, maintain routine brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups to preserve both gum health and veneer longevity
| Recovery Timeline | |

| 2 to 3 weeks | Final gum shape confirmed; veneer preparation carried out |
| Veneer bonding | Veneers fitted, shade and bite verified, final finishing done |
| Long-term | Routine oral hygiene and 6-monthly dental check-ups recommended |
